World Environment Day: 5 Ways You Can Play Your Part

world environment day

This Monday, 5th June millions of people across the planet will celebrate World Environment Day. This special annual event is hosted by the United Nations.  It is designed to encourage worldwide awareness and action for the environment.

The event is also considered to be the ‘people’s day’ for doing something positive for the environment. Collective action has the incredible power to drive change.  We’re big fans of looking after the planet – so we thought we’d suggest five easy ways for you to play your part…

1. Change your light bulbs
Changing your light bulbs from the old-fashioned version to energy-saving ones is one of the best things you can do for the environment. They come in a variety of shapes and sizes for use across the home and they can save you up to 80 per cent on the cost of electricity. It’s a win-win!

2. Set up a recycling station
We all know we should do our bit to recycle but with the hustle and bustle of family life, it can be all too easy to throw away newspapers and empty milk bottles with your non-recyclable rubbish. Setting up a recycling station, with different bins for different materials, will make it far easier to stay on top of your recycling (eco organising at its best).

3. Switch to eco-friendly cleaning products
Have you ever used an eco-friendly toilet cleaner or kitchen degreaser or even a floor cleaner?  They are better for the environment and contain less dangerous chemicals. Make the switch today and see for yourself.

4. Ban baths!
Baths use twice as much water as a shower. Try only having one as a special treat rather than every day.

5. Turn down your thermostat
Adjusting your thermostat by just one degree can save you 10 per cent on your energy bills.  And, its also kinder to the planet.
